If you have ever needed a dental crown, you know the traditional process: one appointment to prepare the tooth and place a temporary crown, a week or two of waiting while a dental lab fabricates the permanent crown, and then a second appointment to have it fitted and cemented. Two visits, two rounds of numbing, and days spent being careful not to crack or dislodge a temporary restoration.
Same-day crowns change all of that. Using advanced CEREC technology, Full Smile Dental can design, mill, and place a permanent ceramic crown in a single appointment — often in under two hours. No temporary crown, no second visit, no waiting.
This guide explains exactly how same-day crowns work, how they compare to traditional crowns in terms of quality and durability, who is a good candidate, and what to expect when you come in. If you have been putting off a crown because of the time or inconvenience involved, this may change your mind.
What Is a Same-Day Crown?
A same-day crown — also called a CEREC crown — is a permanent dental crown that is designed, fabricated, and placed all in one dental visit using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing technology, commonly referred to as CAD/CAM.
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. The system was developed in the 1980s and has been refined over decades into the precise, efficient, and highly reliable technology used in modern dental offices today. Full Smile Dental uses this technology to deliver permanent restorations that meet the same standards of fit, function, and appearance as traditionally fabricated crowns — without the wait.
The crown is milled from a single block of high-quality ceramic material right here in our Texas office while you wait. There is no dental lab involved, no temporary crown to wear and protect, and no need to come back for a second appointment.
How the Same-Day Crown Process Works
Understanding the process helps set clear expectations. Here is a step-by-step overview of what a same-day crown appointment at Full Smile Dental looks like from start to finish.
Step 1: Examination and Treatment Planning
We begin by evaluating the tooth that needs a crown. We take digital X-rays to assess the extent of any decay, damage, or structural compromise. We confirm that a crown is the appropriate restoration and discuss the process with you before anything begins.
Step 2: Tooth Preparation
Local anesthesia is administered to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. We then prepare the tooth by removing any decay or damaged structure and shaping it to receive the crown. This step is the same as in traditional crown procedures.
Step 3: Digital Impression
Instead of the traditional putty impression — which many patients find uncomfortable — we use a small handheld scanner to capture a precise three-dimensional digital image of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. This scan takes just a few minutes and is completely comfortable.
Step 4: Crown Design
The digital scan is sent to our in-office CEREC software, where the crown is designed on-screen. Our dentist customizes the shape, size, and bite of the crown to match your natural teeth and ensure proper occlusion. This step allows for a level of precision and customization that produces a highly accurate fit.
Step 5: Milling
Once the design is finalized, the specifications are sent to our in-office milling unit, which carves the crown from a block of ceramic material. The milling process takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 6: Finishing and Glazing
The milled crown is inspected, adjusted as needed, and then glazed and polished to achieve a natural appearance that blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth. The shade of the ceramic block is selected to match your natural tooth color before milling begins.
Step 7: Placement and Cementation
We check the fit, make any final adjustments, and cement the crown permanently in place. We verify your bite and make sure everything feels comfortable before you leave.
From start to finish, the entire process typically takes between 90 minutes and two hours — all in a single visit.
Same-Day Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns: How Do They Compare?
One of the most common questions we hear is whether same-day crowns are as good as traditionally made crowns. The answer, for the vast majority of cases, is yes.
Material Quality
CEREC crowns are made from high-quality dental-grade ceramic — specifically a material called lithium disilicate or zirconia, depending on the case. These materials are strong, durable, and highly aesthetic. They are the same class of materials used in many traditional lab-fabricated crowns.
Fit and Accuracy
Digital impressions are actually more accurate than traditional putty impressions, which can distort, capture air bubbles, or shift before they set. The CAD/CAM design process allows for precise customization of the crown's shape and bite relationship, resulting in a fit that rivals or in some cases exceeds what a lab can achieve from a physical impression.
Appearance
CEREC crowns are all-ceramic, meaning they have a natural translucency and color that closely mimics tooth enamel. There is no metal substructure, which means no gray line at the gum margin — a common cosmetic concern with older porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.
Durability
Studies consistently show that CEREC crowns perform comparably to traditionally fabricated all-ceramic crowns over time. With proper care — good oral hygiene and regular dental visits — a CEREC crown can last 15 years or more, and many last significantly longer.
The Key Difference: Convenience
The most significant advantage of same-day crowns over traditional crowns is convenience. No temporary crown. No second appointment. No waiting. For patients with busy schedules, dental anxiety around multiple visits, or who have traveled a distance to see us, this difference is substantial.
| Feature | Same-Day CEREC Crown | Traditional Crown |
|---|---|---|
| Number of appointments | One | Two |
| Temporary crown required | No | Yes |
| Wait time for permanent crown | None | 1 to 3 weeks |
| Digital impression | Yes | Sometimes |
| Material | High-quality ceramic | Varies by lab |
| Appearance | Natural, all-ceramic | Varies by type |
| Durability | 15 or more years with care | 15 or more years with care |
| In-office fabrication | Yes | No — sent to external lab |
When Is a Crown Needed?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the entire visible surface of a tooth above the gum line. It is used to restore a tooth that can no longer be effectively repaired with a filling alone. Common reasons a crown may be recommended include:
- A tooth with a very large cavity where there is not enough remaining tooth structure to support a filling
- A tooth that has cracked or fractured and needs to be held together and protected
- A tooth that has been treated with a root canal, which leaves it more brittle and vulnerable to fracture
- A severely worn tooth due to grinding or acid erosion
- A broken or damaged existing crown that needs to be replaced
- Cosmetic correction of a tooth that is severely discolored, misshapen, or disproportionate in size
If your dentist has recommended a crown, same-day CEREC technology means you may be able to take care of it completely in your next visit.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Same-Day Crown?
Same-day crowns are appropriate for the majority of patients who need a crown restoration. They are an excellent choice when:
- The tooth being restored is in a visible area of the mouth and appearance matters
- You have a busy schedule and cannot easily manage multiple appointments
- You have dental anxiety and prefer to complete treatment in one visit
- You have had difficulty with traditional impressions in the past
- You are replacing an old or failing crown
- You need a crown following a root canal
There are some situations where a traditionally fabricated crown may be recommended instead. Very complex cases involving significant bite reconstruction, implant-supported crowns in certain configurations, or situations requiring materials that are not available in ceramic form may be better suited to a lab-fabricated restoration. We evaluate each case individually and recommend the approach that will deliver the best long-term result for your specific tooth and situation.
Caring for Your Same-Day Crown
A CEREC crown is cared for exactly like a natural tooth and requires no special maintenance beyond a good daily oral hygiene routine.
Brush at least twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Floss once daily, taking care to clean around the base of the crown where it meets the gum line. This area is particularly important to keep clean, as bacteria that accumulate there can cause gum disease that eventually compromises the tooth underneath the crown.
Avoid habits that put excessive force on your teeth — chewing ice, biting fingernails, using your teeth to open packaging, or grinding your teeth. If you grind or clench at night, a custom nightguard is strongly recommended to protect your crown and all of your other teeth.
Maintain regular visits to Full Smile Dental for professional cleanings and exams. We check the condition of your crown at each visit and catch any early signs of wear or issues before they become problems.
With proper care, your same-day crown can serve you well for 15 years or more — and many of our patients get significantly longer life from theirs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Same-Day Crowns
How long does a same-day crown appointment take?
Most same-day crown appointments at Full Smile Dental take between 90 minutes and two hours from start to finish. This includes tooth preparation, digital scanning, crown design, milling, and permanent placement. The exact time varies depending on the complexity of the case and the specific tooth being treated.
Are same-day crowns as strong as traditional crowns?
Yes. CEREC crowns are fabricated from high-quality dental ceramic materials — the same class of materials used in many lab-fabricated crowns. Research and clinical data consistently show that same-day crowns perform comparably to traditionally made all-ceramic crowns in terms of strength, durability, and longevity when properly cared for.
Do same-day crowns look natural?
Absolutely. CEREC crowns are made from all-ceramic material that closely mimics the natural translucency and color of tooth enamel. The shade is matched to your surrounding teeth before milling begins, and the crown is finished and polished to a natural appearance. There is no metal substructure and no gray line at the gum margin.
Is the digital scan uncomfortable?
No. The digital scan used to create your CEREC crown is one of the most comfortable parts of the process. A small handheld wand is moved around the prepared tooth for a few minutes to capture a precise three-dimensional image. There is no putty, no gagging, and no waiting for an impression to set.
Will my insurance cover a same-day crown?
Most dental insurance plans that cover traditional crowns also cover same-day CEREC crowns, as the clinical indication for the crown is the same regardless of how it is fabricated. Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend confirming your benefits with your insurance provider. Our team is happy to help you understand your coverage and explore any available financing options.
Can a same-day crown be done on any tooth?
Same-day crowns are appropriate for the vast majority of teeth, including front teeth, premolars, and molars. There are some cases — such as implant-supported crowns in certain configurations or highly complex full-mouth reconstruction cases — where a lab-fabricated crown may be recommended instead. We evaluate each case individually and recommend the best approach for your specific situation.
What is the difference between CEREC and other same-day crown systems?
CEREC is the most established and widely researched CAD/CAM dental system on the market, with over 35 years of clinical use and an extensive body of supporting research. While other same-day crown systems exist, CEREC is recognized as the industry standard for chairside crown fabrication. Full Smile Dental uses CEREC technology to ensure our patients receive the highest quality same-day restoration available.
Do same-day crowns require any special follow-up?
Same-day crowns do not require a separate cementation appointment the way traditional crowns do — the crown is permanently placed the same day. We may ask you to return for a brief bite check if any adjustments are needed, and of course your regular six-month cleanings and exams remain important for monitoring the health of the crown and surrounding tissue. Beyond that, no special follow-up is required.
What happens if my same-day crown chips or breaks?
While CEREC ceramic is strong and durable, no dental restoration is completely indestructible. If your crown chips or cracks, contact our office right away. Small chips can often be repaired chairside. More significant damage may require a replacement crown. Wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth is one of the best ways to protect your crown from fracture over time.
How soon can I eat after getting a same-day crown?
Because same-day crowns are permanently cemented — not placed with a temporary cement the way traditional crowns are — you can eat relatively soon after your appointment. We recommend waiting until the local anesthesia has fully worn off before eating to avoid accidentally biting your cheek or tongue. We also suggest avoiding very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours as the cement fully cures. After that, you can eat normally.
Can I get a same-day crown if I need a root canal first?
Yes. In fact, same-day crowns are a particularly convenient option for teeth that have had a root canal, since a crown is almost always needed to protect the tooth after root canal therapy. Depending on the complexity of your case, it may be possible to complete the root canal and the crown in a coordinated treatment plan that minimizes the number of visits required. We discuss all options during your consultation.
